Safety is the largest issue concerning Pintle hooks and receivers. Ever seen one of these?
My job is to make sure ball wear is minimised and to provide a safe environment. You know what? I cannot make a standard Pintle Hook safe unless it undergoes major re-design.
This tow ball was removed from a Pintle hook and brought to me. The customer just wanted to replace the ball, get the same wear and replace the ball again and again until something else breaks and maybe hurts someone.

Towing can safely be undertaken with either a ball or Pintle coupler.
The success of this design is in the casting. The ring coupler cannot get close to the ball to cause wear.

Ball Capacity
Use the trailer coupler capacity, or the capacity listed above, whichever is lower, if the trailer coupler is unknown. Do not exceed ATM stamped on the tow ball.

Mounting
- Use a mounting structure of sufficient strength to support the rated capacity of the Pintle hook.
- Use the whole pattern supplied with the pintlehook
- Use 4 x 1/2 inch grade 8 bolts.
Operating Instructions for Pintle Hook
- Before operation, Inspect for proper operation, worn, damaged or missing parts and secure mounting. Correct as required before use.
- Open latch by removing safety pin and lifting hook.
- Position drawbar eye over the horn of the Pintle and lower into place.
- Push latch closed and insert safety pin.
Maintenance
For proper performance, perform the following every 30,000 kilometres or 3 months, whichever comes first.
- Clean and inspect for proper operation.
- Inspect for worn, damaged or missing parts. Replace only with approved parts.
- Regularly lubricate latch and lock pivots with light oil lubricant.
- Check mounting bolts for proper tightness.
- Check ball every 500 kilometres of towing.
